- Thumbnails first—plan your scene before you draw. Study how other films similar to your story use camera angles and set ups. Take a movie, pause it every time the view changes and draw one of these simple sketches.
- Let your drawings be MESSY. It’s ok if they don’t look perfect as long as they are clear and readable. It’s the animators job to hit perfection—story artists just point the way.
- Have other people ‘read’ your boards. Without adding in dialogue, give the pictures to someone and see if they can describe what’s going on in the scene.
- Be ok with throwing out drawings, starting over, or making changes. Story artists are the rough draft of the movie so the territory comes with a bunch of editing. There are 150+ boards that got thrown away in the making of Defying Gravity–that’s more boards than were in the ENTIRE Hamilton sequence.

So I have this weird phobia or clusters, things with multiple limbs, teeth and clusters of holes….
And I really hate the internet sometimes… Yesterday I was scrolling through Facebook and there was this stupid video that autoplayed of a fucking tarantula molting crazily sped up…. Double the legs and double the creepy. And I CANNOT GET IT out of MY HEAD. I feel like crying TBH because it was so weird and my brain just couldn’t understand….
I hate how sensitive I am to this crap man…and its only getting worse. :( does anyone have any advice?
I’ve been gone! This is where! From now until March I’m trying to complete one story sequence a week. Some are mine, others (like this) are stories I love and want a shot at re-imagining.
Thoughts!
1. The frosty setting is more symbolic than historically accurate–Hamilton and Burr dueled in July.
2. My goal was to finish the boards in a week. It took five days! My speed is improving.
3. When there is a Hamilton movie, it shouldn’t look anything like this. Just wanted to stretch my imagination a little.The best presentation for this monologue is one actor under a spotlight in a dark theater. @linmanuel @leslieodomjr hope you don’t mind the creative liberties. Your performances on the soundtrack are outstanding!
