Hey jelly beans don’t forget when you’re working on your resumes that commissions 100% count as job experience! Label that shit ‘freelance work’ and name a few clients or projects!

freelance/commission skills:

- self directed
- incorporating feedback
- adaptable
- satisfying client expectations
- working closely with clients/ working one on one
- meeting deadlines
- communication skills

What counts as freelance work?:

- basically anything anybody asked you to do
- if it’s for a company or group name them
- if your mom or a friend or a stranger bought a painting or sketch from you they are an individual commissioner/client
(if your mom asked you to make something for her organization/club/publication/thing put down the name of that group as your client!)
- if you entered a contest with your work it was created ‘on spec’ (speculative basis)
- if you made work for free for a cause you believe in it’s ‘pro bono’
- sometimes personal projects are worth mentioning, it’s a ‘self initiated project’
TIP: if you worked and weren’t paid/weren’t paid a lot you don’t have to mention that you didn’t get $s

You don’t have to list every job you’ve done- go with a shortlist of the most exciting, while implying that you’ve done more!

If the job you’re trying to snag involves the art/design/the stuff you do, definitely make sure to include a link to your website, or a pdf portfolio! Make it easy to see your work!

You can make a separate heading called “Side Projects” and include commissions into your resume. The most important part to remember however is that whatever projects you include? Need to be directly related with the job you’re applying for.

So say you’re applying for a graphic designer position and the job responsibility looks something like this “Graphic Designer will work on the Print/Creative team developing marketing campaigns, Monster Jam souvenir yearbooks, Ads, posters, flyer design, billboards, merchandise, logo design, monster truck design, digital archiving and storage and photo correction/manipulation & web related materials. Will also develop graphic design work for all of the company properties.“

And you can think of commissions or freelance work where you helped a friend by making a logo design or did photo corrections/manipulation for a cousin’s wedding? Hell YES include that stuff in. Just make it sound all professional and shit like

- Conducted photo correction and manipulation for complete wedding album by using XYZ programs. Completed task within X-days.
