Superman’s home state is in Trouble…
Of the many reasons that I worry for my beautiful (but often overlooked as literally a ‘flyover’ state)home of Kansas, one recent occurance in particular has me furious.
Basically, legislators in state have 23 days to get their act together and come up with an equitable and constitutional solution to fund public schools or THEY WILL NOT OPEN next year. This is a huge deal! And yesterday the Legislation session ENDED without coming o a conclusion of what the heck to do!
Basically grumpy old white.men are bickering about just how much our children and their education is actually worth.
They grumble and say that we are wasting out money on school funding. Hey guys? As a country our education system is already in the toilet and your arrogance is not going to help.
Public schools matter. In so many ways! Here are some examples that don’t just include education (because that’s obvious and important.)
1. For many students their school may be the ONLY safe place they have from abusive families. This may be the ONLY PLACE they have a voice.
2. Similarly, this may be the only time.where they can EAT. Many families rely on help from school lunches. This could be the only meal they eat during the day.
3. This could be the only place where a student can be free to explore who they are and their minds are exposed to wonderful books and knowledge that they cannot get anywhere else. If not for school, I may never had the encouragement to purse a career in art.
There are probably many more amazing examples as to why public schools are important…..
I am just really sick about this. Our kids’ future is on the line…and these lawmakers just sit around in air conditioned state buildings yammering about the importance of funding schools. There is so much at stake.
These kids could find the cure for so many horrible diseases or discover the next big space anomaly, or even invent extraordinary things!
Just how much is that worth?
Priceless, I say.
